All you have to know about SSL padlocks and other e-security symbols

Websites with SSL certificate are possible to recognize in a several ways. The main graphic sign is the padlock. It is a general sign of on-line security.

No matter what type of SSL certificate is installed, each address with SSL begins with https:// prefix. The letter "s" is added to basic protocol http:// and means secured.

However beside technical sign of working SSL certificate, websites have graphic icons which says about security (trust logos, site seals, trust seals etc.). There is more than one type of it.

Padlocks showed by browsers
Most browsers display graphic information about SSL certificate installed on secured website. It does not depend on vendor or the type of certificate. And the sign is the small padlock. In all browsers it looks differently, as below:

The location of displaying also is not the same for every browser:

The icon of padlock is the second (after https://) element proofing installation of SSL certificate. However latest versions of several browsers have replaced it for the color of URL or its part. We will not find the padlock everywhere. And we also suppose to remember that not every padlock (added in the content of the site for example) improves on-line security.

Vendors seal
Site seals are additional confirmation of using SSL product. It is often free of charge SSL element. Mostly you can find it in the down part of the site, but the user can decide by himself where is the best place to show it. After clicking the seal, you will see details and data about verification of the site.

Additional trust logos
It is the last type of SSL symbols. This graphic sign can work on sites which e.g. is not protected by SSL certificate, but the payments are handled by the independent service with SSL. In that case the logo proves just the safe payments and it is issued after payment system verification.

As you can see, SSL certificates give more than e-security. It also proves verification of the real business entity and shows confirmation of compliance with standards of e-safety.
