SSL Websites Rank Higher in Google Search

11-08-2014 13:14:13
As of this past Wednesday, websites that aren’t encrypting connections will get a lower ranking on Google’s search engine. This is a part of a Google initiative to promote better online security practices.
This change is to encourage website owners and developers to implement SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), which uses a digital certificate to encrypt all communications between the site and the Web browser. This encryption is signified by a green padlock in browsers and HTTPS at the beginning of a URL.

As Google scans Web pages, it takes into account certain attributes to determine where the site will appear in search rankings. It has added the use of HTTPS, or having a SSL certificate, as a determination factor. Though currently having HTTPS encryption only gives secured sites a minor ranking boosting, Zineb Ait Bahajji and Gary Illyes, Webmaster Trends analysts for Google, proclaimed that"over time, we may decide to strengthen it, because we'd like to encourage all website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep everyone safe on the web."

For website owners and developers who want to make the switch to HTTPS, Bahajji and Illyes included a list of steps in their blog post, such as choosing between a single, multi-domain, or wildcard certificate, choosing a 2048-bit key certificate, and more. You can check out their blog post here for more details on securing your site.
